The Lord Mayor and Director of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce were amongst those arrested
The Greater Manchester Police Service today announced that it has arrested the entire population of the city in a crackdown on alcohol fuelled violent crime. Chief Constable, Peter Fahy, told reporters that everybody in the Greater Manchester region had been placed in custody, and that officers from other parts of the country had to be called in to arrest most of the city’s police force as well.
Fahy said “Violent crime and alcohol abuse has blighted this vibrant and friendly city for too long. I hope that putting the people of Manchester behind bars we will send a clear message that these mindless thugs are not welcome here.”
The move is being watched closely by police forces from across the country, with similar initiatives planned for Liverpool and Newcastle. Last year a Metropolitan Police plan to arrest everybody in Croydon was abandoned after it was discovered that the entire town had been stabbed to death in a clash between rival gangs of youths.
